This degree in Biotechnology provides students with a solid and integrated understanding of basic sciences, as well as an advanced training in the various fields of biotechnology. This will create highly skilled graduates, capable of working for biotechnology-based companies, agribusinesses, pharmaceutical, environmental, or related; or to allow the frequency of a 2nd cycle of studies to further strengthen knowledge and expertise in the topic.
This degree also intends to develop autonomous and creative students capable of critical thinking and proficient in communication skills that will allow graduates to successfully integrate and participate in any professional project, scientific research or technological in the area of biotechnology and related ones, in any part of the world.
Key learning outcomes The course aims to impart to graduates Biotechnology:
* A strong and integrated training in basic sciences such as Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Physics to enable them to apply their knowledge and skills within the bachelor degree specific disciplinary areas;
* Practice skills in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Genetics and Biotechnology within the attended laboratory disciplines;
* Theoretical knowledge needed for understanding the biological phenomena and ability to apply that knowledge, at the laboratory or industrial level, in food, environmental, biomedical, pharmaceutical, or related field areas;
* Competencies in theoretical and practical planning of biotechnological processes, its optimization and management;
* Ability to implement safety procedures and quality systems to work in food and environmental field or to the manipulation of genetically modified microorganisms applied in biotechnological processes;
* Knowledge and skills for pursuing studies of second cycle with a suitable degree of autonomy, particularly in areas of interface between the Biochemistry and Biology and Engineering Sciences and Technology;
* Knowledge and generic skills, namely in laboratory practice, teamwork, production management, marketing, scientific communications in the area of Biotechnology. Use of IT tools, and work according to ethical principles, applicable to all professional activities.
