Profile of the programme

The Master’s Degree in Biotechnology aims to provide advanced, multidisciplinary and integrated training in Biotechnology, providing a thorough knowledge of biological processes as well as their possible applications in areas such as health, environment and food. This Master’s Degree also aims to develop advanced practical and research skills, preparing well-trained professionals in the field of biotechnology, with a critical and entrepreneurial spirit, with the capacity to identify problems and to find, in an autonomous way, practical and innovative solutions in the development of products, goods and services in the field of Biotechnology and in related fields. The objectives of this cycle of studies aim to respond to the growing need of professionals with advanced training in Biotechnology as well as contribute to the practical application of the new knowledge generated by basic research and transfer of solutions to the industry. |
Key learning outcomes

Students trained in the 2nd Cycle in Biotechnology will acquire advanced scientific and technical skills in different areas of Biotechnology, being able to develop or optimize processes based on a comprehensive overview of the R+D+I process (research, development and innovation). Students completing the course will be able to apply the scientific knowledge acquired to solve specific problems in multidisciplinar contexts. The 2nd Cycle also promotes an acquisition of transversal competences, such as the development of the entrepreneur profiles; ability to use computer systems and statistical analysis in the collection and data processing; ability to plan, perform and critically analyze the results obtained and propose solutions to the problems based on knowledge and available scientific literature; development of teamwork in accordance with ethical principles and communication skills. |
Occupational profiles of graduates

Students trained in the Biotechnology Master will be able to meet the challenges posed by a developing sector at the national and international level, providing a link between lab research and the industrial and commercial activities. The training of the Masters in Biotechnology will provide career opportunities in various sectors, both industrial and in services, from the pharmaceutical and agro-food industries to the environmental area, covering the areas of research and technological development, production, quality control, regulation, technology transfer, commercial services and management.

Learning facilities

The 2nd Cycle in Biotechnology will work mainly in the Faculties of Science and Health Sciences, which have several teaching rooms and laboratories as well as several specialized laboratories in their Research centers, where students can develop their research projects in the 2nd year. It also has the support of the laboratories of the Escola Superior Agrária and the Center for Plant Biotechnology in Castelo Branco
There are also infrastructures to support general teaching at the University, such as the Central Library with access to different online bibliographic Databases, Computer Center, WLAN type wireless throughout the University with permanent Internet access.
UBI also offers students canteens and bars with meal service, several residences, a medical center and a sports pavilion. |
