Code 10324
Year 4
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Hidráulica e Ambiente
Entry requirements Hydraulics and ADA
Mode of delivery Face-to-Face (Theoretical and laboratorial classes).
Work placements Not applicable.
Learning outcomes This Course Unit intends to provide students with the knowledge required for hydrologic design, in the areas of surface water, stormwater urban drainage and water management. It is intended that students develop skills of independent learning and critical thinking, analysis and synthesis, group work, focusing on the practical application of theoretical knowledge to solve problems. At the end of the course the student should be able to:
(a) Have knowledge and understanding of the concepts related with the hydrological phenomena and management of water resources
(b) Characterise watersheds and their water availability
(c) Characterise and evaluate floods, including estimation of intense rainfall and flood peak discharges and respective hydrographs.
(d) Design stormwater urban drainage systems.
Syllabus 1. WATER RESOURCES: Water storages and fluxes over the Globe, the continents, the Iberia, and Portugal. Water cycle. Runoff and Groundwater. Systems to transform potential water resources into available water resources. Damages caused by water and its control. Climate change. Legislation.
2. HYDROLOGY: Rainfall runoff processes. Factors affecting the runoff. Watershed. Hydrologic Balance. Precipitation. Evapotranspiration. Infiltration. Streamflow. Evaluation of annual streamflow from climate parameters. Measurement of hydrological variables. Return period and risk. Intense rainfall. Flood flow analysis. Flood hydrographs. Design discharge. Water resources development.
3. URBAN HYDROLOGY: Conception and constitution of stormwater urban drainage systems. Computation of stormwater discharges. Detention basins. Hydraulic design of drainage conduits.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This one semester Course Unit involves 60 hours of scheduled contact activities organised in theoretical classes (30 T: presentation of syllabus supported by documentation related to practical situations) practical classes (30 PL: where students, working in groups, perform the practical work, and may include a field trip). The drawing up of the report is part of the autonomous work.

The final classification (CF) is assigned according to the following criteria:
CF = max (0.5 x TR + 0.5 x E) with TR > 10.0v. and Ei > 8.0v. and CF > 9.5v. Oral test if CF > 16.5 v.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
