Learning outcomes To teach knowledge of Electromagnetism and Optics, at theoretical, theoretical, practical and practical levels, including carrying out assignments. At the end of the Curricular Unit, the student must demonstrate knowledge about the creation of electromagnetic fields by charges and currents, action of fields on charges, material media in the presence of static electric and magnetic fields. Have notions about variable regimes in electrical circuits and alternating current circuits. Show understand Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic waves and basic phenomena of optics. Know how to solve problems. Understand and know how to perform work on the subject.
Syllabus 1. Electrostatics. Electrostatics in vacuum and in material media.
2. Direct Current. Fundamental laws and direct current circuits.
3. Magnetostatics. Magnetostatics in vacuum and in material media.
4. Variable electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic induction. Displacement current density. Elements of circuits in quasi-stationary regime.
5. Maxwell's vacuum equations. Conservation of energy and power. Maxwell's equations in material media. Variable regimes in electrical circuits. alternating current.
6. Electromagnetic waves. Maxwell's equations for fields with sinusoidal variation. Wave equations in the void. Electromagnetic spectrum. Wave equations in homogeneous, linear and isotropic material media. Electromagnetic waves in material media.
7. Reflection and refraction of electromagnetic waves at plane interfaces. Laws of reflection and refraction (Snell's Laws). Interference, diffraction and polarization.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The evaluation in this UC will be periodic with 1 global frequency of Multiple-Choice Questions (PEM), to be discounted and without consultation elements. Participation to T and TP classes will be counted. The Teaching-Learning Classification (CEA) of this UC, 0-20 values, is calculated using the following formula:

NF of CEA = 0.05 x NP + 0.95 x NFG where:

NP - is the Participation Note, 0-20 values
NFG - is the Global Frequency Grade, 0-20 values.

A form will be provided.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
