Communication Systems

Code 11217
Year 1
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(15H)/T(30H)/TP(15H)
Scientific area Electrotechnics and Electronics
Entry requirements Basic knowledge of the analysis and processing of signals (acquired in curricular units of Calculus III, Digital Systems, Signal Analysis and Circuit Analysis), telecommunications and Communication protocols (of the Telecommunications) and data acquisition (of the Instrumentation and Measurement)
Mode of delivery Face-to-face.
Work placements N/A.
Learning outcomes To understand fundamental concepts of physical, MAC and link layer protocols, naming and addressing, routing protocols, transport layer and quality of service (QoS) in wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs).
To know how to analyse the problem of the coverage of a vast zone by a WSAN. To analyse the dynamic voltage scaling and the power consumption versus lifetime for the WSN nodes. To know how to determine the impact of the signal-to-noise ratio in the bit error rate. To interpret the characteristics of the medium access and control (MAC) protocols whilst identifying energy efficient MAC procedures. To know how to apply error detection and correction codes. To apply concepts of naming and addressing in WSANs, distinguishing content and geographic based routing. To analyse the most common routing protocols applied in WSNs.
