Learning outcomes The aim of the course is to provide students with a broad perspective on the state of the art of peer-to-peer networks and to provide students with skills to identify open problems and to conduct research in this area. At the end of the course the student should be able to characterize the state of the art and know the boundaries of knowledge on some topics of peer-to-peer networks, should be able to identify open problems in the field and be able to formulate possible solutions to those problems.
Syllabus 1. Overview of worldwide evolution of peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic. Overview of peer-to-peer systems 2. Peer-to-peer overlays. Peer-to-peer filesharing. 3. Unstructured peer-to-peer systems. Search methods. Adding structure to unstructured systems. 4. Distributed hash tables (DHT). Structured peer-to-peer systems. 5. Performance of peer-to-peer systems. 6. Peer-to-Peer media streaming. 7. Security issues in peer-to-peer networks. 8. Detection of encrypted peer-to-peer traffic.
