Learning outcomes The aim is to study the growth of microorganisms and their use in producing a given product. This course aims to endow students with knowledge on bioreactor basics, microbial processes in particular, including kinetics, transport phenomena, the types of bioreactors, and applications.
At the end of the course students should:
Knowing the kinetics involved in biological reactions
Know the main kinetic parameters in fermentations
Describe different types of bioreactors and modes of operation
Describe the influence of mass transfer, heat and rheology on bioreactor performance
Being able to perform simple calculations involving balances for biomass, substrates and products in transient state
Perform simple calculations related to the design of bioreactors
Being able to conduct experimental work in the field of bioreactors and interpret the results
Syllabus 1. Introduction.
2. Mass balance and energy in transient state.
3. Kinetics of microbial processes.
Substrate consumption and product formation.
Microbial growth in transient state with and without inhibition.
4. Bioreactors.
Operating modes and classification.
Batch, fed-batch, CSTR, plug-flow, association of reactors, selection of reactors. Solid phase fermentation.
Resolution of case studies.
5. Introduction to transport phenomena.
Mass, heat and momentum transfer.
