Learning outcomes |
This course aims to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts of law and, more specifically, with economic law, providing future economists with the main references for the legal regulation of the economy. The aim is to provide students with up-to-date knowledge of the legal frameworks for economic activity in Portugal and the European Union.

I. Introduction to Economic Law 1. Approach to the concept of law, its purpose, necessity and sources; 2. The relationship between economics and law; 3. Object of Economic Law; 4. Sources of Economic Law. II. The Portuguese Economic Constitution and State Intervention in the Economy 1. Concept of the Economic Constitution; 2. Brief historical outline; 3. The current Economic Constitution; 4. The Economic Organization; 5. The Portuguese Economic Administration; 6. The State as a producer of goods and services. III. European Union Law and the Internal Market 1. The legal order of the Union; 2. Objectives and Fundamental Principles of EU Law; 3. EU institutions and bodies; 4. Fundamental Economic Freedoms; IV. EU Competition Rules and Portuguese Law 1. Agreements, concerted practices and decisions by associations of undertakings; 2. Abuse of a dominant position; 3. Concentrations; 4. State aid.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
At the end of this unit the student should be able to master the fundamental concepts of economic law. To meet these objectives, it will be taught practical classes in which they begin to explain, the concepts of economic law, following its review, at which the students are being encouraged to participate,and to have the opportunity to promote and develop their reasoning ability. Finally, it will be discussed and solved many practical cases on the subject taught so that students have the possibility of applying the contents exposed to specific cases with the proper use of respective laws.
