Learning outcomes |
1) To deepen the knowledge about major sociological works, themes and structuring concepts of sociological theory; 2) To provide students from related areas of sociology with comprehensive and simultaneously deep knowledge of what has been the theory in this scientific field; 3) To enable students with theoretical tools allowing them to develop their respective research projects. 4) In the aftermath of this unit, students should be able to identify, within the scope of sociological theories, those that better legitimate and support their study objects.

Syllabus |
Firstly, a brief portrait about the history of the sociological theoretical production. Secondly, the major classical works of Sociology will be discussed, trying to assess their current importance. The contemporary works will be discussed and assessed for their importance on studying the contemporary societies. As such, students will study works referring the problematics of the industrial western societies, as well as those of the so called Third World. Within this epistemic concern on decentralized theoretical production, some major works of post-colonialism theory will be discussed.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
Teaching methodologies: Lectures, group discussions, reading and discussion of texts.
Assessment criteria: An individual work and its presentation on a sociological theory or an author or a comparison of theories or authors, taking into account the definition of the thesis' object of study, if already defined.
