Learning outcomes Objectives:

1 - Convey to students the fundamentals of foreign policy analysis, decision-making mechanisms in foreign policy, foreign policies of the great powers (USA, Russia and China) and Portuguese foreign policy;

2 - Convey to students the fundamentals of the diplomatic institution, addressing its historical evolution, its functions, its typology and the main challenges that diplomacy faces as a result of globalization;

3 - Encourage students to deepen the themes addressed through their own research;

4 - Develop the capacity of analysing decisions made by states in the field of foreign policy;

5 - Understand the origin and historical evolution of the diplomatic institution and its importance in the contemporary era.

Learning outcomes:

1 - Identify the main lines of the foreign policies of the USA, Russia, China and Portugal and the historical factors that underlie them.

2 - Analyze foreign policy decisions focusing mainly on the decision-making process;

3 - Understand and explain the importance of diplomacy in international relations.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Most of the classes are theoretical-practical, with a lecture component dedicated to the transmission of contents and a practical one in which students are actively involved with interventions and debates on the topics addressed. Students conduct critical reviews of articles, texts and audiovisual materials analyzed in class and the semester ends with a debate/simulation. These activities and methods aim at developing the students’ skills in interpretation and discussion both in written and oral expressions.

Minimum attendance required for approval and admission to the exam: 80% of classes.

Continuous assessment
Participation in classes: 10%.
Written test (December 19th): 60%.
Critical review (maximum of 1000 words, to be delivered by e-mail by January 9th): 15%.
Debate/simulation (January 9th): 15%.
