Learning outcomes — Recognize the path of the Latin language to the Portuguese;
— Connect customs and rituals of the Roman society to the Portuguese society;
— Understand the main influences of Latin literature in Portuguese literature from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary;
— Promote self-learning strategies;
— Produce scientific texts.
Syllabus 1. Latin and Latin culture as the basis of the Portuguese culture:
1.1. Romanization in Portugal.
1.2. The Latin as vocabulary stratus of the Portuguese language;
1.3. Latin influences on morphology and syntax of the Portuguese language.
2. Influences of Roman religion in Catholicism:
2.1. From paganism to Christianity - influences of Roman religion in Roman Catholic Church structure.
2.3. Latin as the language of religion since Middle Ages to the Second Vatican Council.
3. The Roman literature and Portuguese literature:
3.1. Middle Ages in the Iberian Peninsula: a Latin empty?;
3.2. The Renaissance as a revaluation of the classics (epic and theater);
3.3. Themes, forms and Latin vocabulary present in Portuguese poetry.
4. Latin influences leisure level:
4.1. Panem et circenses = "Bread and football?";
4.2. Roman arenas and bullfighting;
4.3. The thermal baths and the SPA (Salus Per Aquam).
5. Latin influences in the gastronomic habits: the Mediterranean diet

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The evaluation, whose criteria are previously discussed with the students and in the form of seminar, includes an oral presentation of a monographic work, tutored by the teacher, considering, nevertheless, the active participation of the students in the classes.
The student has the possibility to present in the examination the monographic work reelaborated in case of non-use or for the purpose of improvement of grade.
