Learning outcomes — Recognize the path of the Latin language to the Portuguese;
— Read the Latin text according to the restored pronunciation;
— Apply the concepts of Latin grammar, such as declensions and conjugations, in adapted texts;
— Accurately translate Latin texts;
— Connect customs and rituals of the Roman society to the current society.
— Recognize the major literary trends and authors of Latin literature.
Syllabus 1.1. Formation of the Portuguese: from Latin to the Romance languages (main phonetic phenomena in the
passage from Latin to Portuguese).
1.2. Words and Latin expressions in current use.
1.3. Lexical influences from Latin in Portuguese and Spanish language.
2. Pronunciation of Latin and reflections in the accentuation of the Portuguese language.
2. Reading, grammar review and translation of adapted texts.
3. Morphology: declension of nouns, adjectives and pronouns; verbal inflection in indicative, imperative
and infinitive. Reflections in the morphology of the Portuguese.
4. Syntax: coordination and subordination (with indicative), circumstantial complements, prepositions and
their regencies. Influences of Latin in the structure of the Portuguese sentence.
5. Culture.
5.1. The history of Rome.
5.2. Religion, mythology, society and games.
5.3. Major literary trends and authors of Latin literature.
