Learning outcomes Understand the principles of digital electronics and its main applications. Acquire skills in applying instrumentation techniques. At the end of the course students should be able to:
Use the binary number system to represent data and perform arithmetic calculations.
Represent and simplify logic functions.
Design and implement combinational and sequential digital circuits with SSI and MSI circuits.
Describe the operation of a simple microprocessor.
Discuss the architecture and functions involved in a data acquisition system.
Explain the working principle of the main types of transducers.
Explain the principles of digital instrumentation in the measurement of signals.
Use virtual and digital instrumentation in experimental measurements.
Identify the technologies and protocols used in data transmission.
Syllabus Number systems and binary codes.
Boolean algebra. Simplification of expressions and minimization of circuits.
Combinational logic circuits with logic gates and MSI components.
Technology and manufacture of digital integrated circuits.
Synchronous sequential circuits. Registers, shift registers and counters.
Memories and programmable logic devices (PLD).
Microprocessors and microcontrollers.
Data acquisition systems. Sampling. Quantization. Analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion. DSPs.
Transducers.
Fundamentals of digital instrumentation. Measurement of time and frequency: universal digital counters. Digital multimeter: voltage, current and resistance measurements. Oscillography. Digital oscilloscopes. Spectrum analyzer. Virtual instrumentation.
Transmission of information between systems. Synchronous and asynchronous transmission. Parallel and serial communication. Multiplexed transmission. Error detection and correction. Communication protocols.
