Learning outcomes |
By the end of the semester, the student should be able to: - Know how to analyze the performance of an optical element or a visual instrument analytically and computationally. - Know the most relevant image quality metrics in visual systems. - Know how to design and optimize simple optical elements such as ophthalmic lenses, contact lenses or intraocular lenses, taking into account a schematic model of the eye. - Apply the acquired knowledge to the design of optical and optometric instruments.

Syllabus |
1. Complements of Optics and Image Quality Parameter Analysis.
2. Optical Systems Design and Analysis Software.
3. Human eye simulation and visual instruments.
4. Introduction to the process of designing visual systems:
a) Specification, Paraxial layout (from thin lens to thick lens systems), finite ray tracing (geometric and wavefront aberrations ), Optimization and Evaluation.
b) An example of DEO application: Design of a magnification system.
c) Other application examples: monofocal and multifocal contact lenses, monofocal and multifocal refractive diffractive and segmented intraocular lenses. Wavefront technology and freeform lenses.
