Learning outcomes The main learning goal, for this unit consists, from the student point of view, acquisition of concepts and knowledge from previous years, mainly Wave Optics and Optical Systems and its application to life sciences. In this way, the learning on fundamentals of photonics and its respective applications to medical and biology are relevant. Furthermore, special attention is put on the resolution of worked examples and laboratory work focused on the program. Finally, it is intended that the student must develop basic research capacity and the ability to transmit knowledge by doing bibliographic research and its respective oral presentation focused on a topic of the program.
Syllabus (1) Light propagation in biological tissues; (2) Measurement of optical parameters in biological tissues; (3) Optical properties of the eye tissues; (4) Light sources and beam delivery systems, (5) Measurement techniques based on: coherence, polarization, diffused light and photoacoustic effect; (6) diagnostic applications of biomedical optics: optical tomography, photoacoustic tomography, optical coherence tomography, digital holographic microscopy, polarimetric techniques; (7) therapeutic applications of lasers and other light sources.
