Learning outcomes The curricular unit aims to provide students with a comprehensive view of communication theories, with particular emphasis on those that focus on technologies and visual communication.
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Distinguishing the various theories of communication, in particular those which place greater emphasis on visual and technological aspects.
- Interpret concrete communication phenomena from the point of view of different theories.
- Present orally and in writing the application of communication theories to specific cases.
Syllabus 1. Introduction to communication studies and theories.
2. Intersectionality and communicational phenomena.
3. The economy of attention: the role of design.
4. Image semiotics and visual grammar.
5. Mathematical theory of communication, cybernetics and actor network theory.
6. Society of the spectacle, simulation and simulacrum.
7. Media as extensions and the netowrk society.
8. Convergences, algorithms and survelillance.
9. Design as a form of communication (case analysis).

B - Specific texts
A selection of specific texts, of mandatory reading, covering each and every one of the topics of the program, will be avaliabe for sudents.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The reading, interpretation and commenting of texts, the tutorial sessions, the viewing of audiovisual material and subsequent discussion, promotes the active participation of students who will provided with knowledge for the development of research and problems solving. Individual or group projects, in class and outside, to promote autonomy and critical perspective. The written tests and works will validate that the student has acquired skills in terms of the knowledge and applicability of the contents.
