Learning outcomes |
The Stratification and Social Classes curricular unit questions a wide range of problems related to social inequality, making it in the light of the contributions of some of the classic authors of Sociology (Karl Marx, Max Weber), contributions that have continued in recent decades, mainly through works like Ralf Dahrendorf, Pierre Bourdieu or Erik Olin Wright. It will be a matter of having as background all the social change that has so clearly marked modern societies, with particular emphasis on the Portuguese case.

Syllabus |
1st part: the problem of stratification and social classes.
The idea of an unequal society and the existence of different theoretical-analytical perspectives and the concept of social mobility.
2nd part: theories of stratification and social classes
a) Functionalism and stratification principles.
b) Max Weber's multi-dimensional perspective
c) Theories of social classes: from Karl Marx to neomarxisms
3rd part: the current debate on stratification, social mobility and social classes (in particular the middle class), with application to the Portuguese case.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
Teaching methodologies involve the application of theoretical classes, theoretical-practical classes and oral presentations, where collective debate and critical thinking will be stimulated. The evaluation is made by considering the following components: participation in classes, written test and group work and writing an individual reading sheet.
