Learning outcomes To complete successfully this curricular unit students must demonstrate:
- Be able to understand and to identify the most important transformations of the family
relationships in the Western countries, especially in Portuguese society;
- Be able to understand the diversity of family trajectories and the plural patterns of family
functioning in its relation with broader social contexts;
- Be able to argue the “crisis of the family” in the context of the recent changes in social
behaviors and values, identifying the main arguments pro and against;
- Know how to analyze issues and results of sociological research in family;
- Know how to critically analyze texts and present in summary form its main propositions;
- Scientific attitudes towards prejudice and discrimination in relation to the diversity of family forms.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Exposition of contents and debate; tutorials lessons; collective analysis of scientific texts; verbal and written exercises on the syllabus of this unit; individual exercises on the studied texts. Student assessment is achieved through: i) individual work-40%; ii) Group oral presentation-30%; iii) Group work on a Theme-30%.
