Learning outcomes General Objectives and Learning Outcomes
It is intended that during the semester the students deepen a set of historical-artistic notions and concepts associated with the evolution of symbolic thought manifest in Art, and develop the necessary skills to relate their influence as a cultural and imaginary phenomenon.
At the end of the semester the student should be able to:
• Observe and critically analyze works of art from its earliest days;
• Associate artists and works with corresponding artistic styles and movements;
• Identify and associate historical events as a motive of artistic movements;
• Develop research group work in accordance with established parameters;
• Identify influences of artistic movements throughout the History of Art and Image.
Syllabus The Paleolithic and the development of symbolic thought; • The "first" Art • Neolithic and the new conception of space: the cases of Jericho and Çatal Hüyük. Early civilizations; • Polytheistic religions and the art; • The cult of the dead. The pre-classical civilizations • The civilizations of Mesopotamia; • Egyptian civilization; • The Hebrew civilization. Classical Antiquity: Greece • In the early days: Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations; • The classical and Hellenistic periods: historical and social contextualization; • The art and concept of polis. Classical Antiquity: Rome • From Foundations to Empire; • The deification of art. The end of the Old Age • The fall of the Western Roman Empire; • The cultural affirmation of the Eastern Roman Empire; • Pre-Columbian culture. The High Middle Ages • Byzantine art and iconoclasm; • Islamic expansion and art in Al-Andalus; • The artistic heritage of the barbarian. The Middle Ages • The European hegemony of the Catholic Church; • The Romanesque "style"; • The Gothic "style". The Renaissance • Humanist values and the context of the Italian Trecento; • The golden era of the Renaissance • The Manueline "style" in Portugal. The Baroque • Dignitas, decorum, veritas and the Reformation of the Catholic Church; • Art as political and religious propaganda. The Baroque in Portugal • The Baroque in the context of the Portuguese microcosm; • From the "isms" to the avant-garde of the XX: brief historical-artistic contextualization.
