• Identify and understand the main sociological approaches to consumption;
• Discuss the significance of consumption in everyday life within contemporary societies;
• Relate consumption practices to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
• Develop a critical sociological perspective on the themes explored throughout the course unit.
Syllabus 1. Main Theoretical Approaches to the Sociology of Everyday Life
1.1. Everyday life as a social laboratory and empirical field.
1.2. Everyday actions and social structures.
2. The Consumer Society
2.1. Consumption, consumerism, and consumers.
2.2. Everyday life and the "cathedrals of consumption".
2.3. The emotional dimension of consumption and everyday life.
2.4. Consumption practices and their social and environmental consequences.
2.5. Consumption practices and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
2.6. The relationship between consumption and economic growth.
2.7. The relationship between consumption and environmental sustainability: towards a degrowth society?
