Geographical Information Systems II

Code 13309
Year 1
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload T(10H)/TP(20H)
Scientific area Sistemas de Informação Geográfica
Entry requirements This Curricular Unit aims to familiarize students with some advanced GIS capabilities by complementing the GIS I. It is the main objective to provide the students with autonomy to deepen the knowledge acquired in class, in order to be able to proceed with the automation, processing, acquisition and dissemination of GIS information. At the end of the CU, students should have acquired the following competencies, as well as the ability to autonomously deepen them: (a) Understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of process automation, use and preparation of GIS information in mobile equipment, analysis of information in webGIS systems, processing and visualization of 3D information. (b) Domain of GIS geoprocessing functionalities, namely: automation and mobile GIS. (c) Mastery of the basic 3D processing features.
Mode of delivery Face to Face (practical and laboratory classes).
Work placements Not applicable.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The CU is taught during the second semester, involving 30 hours of contact with the teacher and 138 hours of autonomous student work (total: 168 hours). The approval to the CU grants the graduate 6 ECTS. Theoretical classes contemplate the brief theoretical exposition of the syllabus contents, while in the TP classes it is promoted the resolution accompanied by exercises and the discussion and analysis of conceptual questions, serving as the basis for the development of a final practical work, individual and autonomous, which aims to solve an exercise using the tools learned and with application of much of the theoretical knowledge taught. The training provided complements the competences acquired previously, namely from the SIG I CU. The evaluation is carried out through supervised work (25%), an individual and autonomous practical work (75%). The evaluation criteria may be reviewed annually in accordance with the UBI RGAC.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
