Learning outcomes At the end of this curricular unit the student should be able to: - Analyze and interpret the harmful and beneficial influences of electromagnetic fields and waves on the human body - Describe the phenomena inherent to the electromagnetic field - List and discern the types of equipment used in electromedicine - Describe and enumerate the mechanisms and effects of electromagnetic radiation in biophysical systems. - interpret and compare the international rules and lines of action to protect against the harmful effects of exposure to electromagnetic radiation. - Integrate multidisciplinary teams with doctors. - Promote and develop studies, individually and as a team.
Syllabus 1. Fundamental concepts in electromagnetism.
2. Electromagnetic interactions with biological systems and health hazards.
3. Biological effects of electric and magnetic fields.
4. Radiofrequency standards and dosimetry.
5. Electromagnetic risk analysis.
6. Therapeutic applications of electromagnetic energy.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The syllabus contents are exposed and discussed with students in TP type classes; in PL the students solve and discuss application problems. The assessment is done with a written test and also solving exercises/problems.
Final assessment of the UC will consist of a punctual component and a continuous component:
1. Taking a written test (75%)
2. Continuous assessment (25%)
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
