Mode of delivery Face-to-face
Learning outcomes The discipline aims to introduce students to different algorithms and computational techniques used in Bioinformatics, with a focus on their practical application.

Specific objectives:
O1) Familiarization with algorithms and computational techniques currently used in Bioinformatics and their application to problem-solving in biology and medicine.
O2) Exploration of computational tools and databases of interest for problem-solving in Bioinformatics.
O3) Identification of research directions in Bioinformatics.
O4) Acquisition and/or reinforcement of soft skills such as teamwork, analytical and argumentative abilities, discussion of ideas with peers and faculty, ...
Syllabus 1. Introduction to Bioinformatics
2. Algorithms and tools in Bioinformatics
3. Databases of biological interest
4. Sequence alignment methods and construction of phylogenetic trees
5. Pattern or motif detection methods
7. Gene expression data analysis methods
8. Methods for studying the interaction of proteins and biological networks
9. Methods for predicting protein structure and function

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment for the teaching-learning period consists of 2 tests (completed individually), 3 practical assessments (individual), and 1 challenge (in pairs).

Theoretical and Practical Knowledge Test (T1 and T2) – 12 (6+6) points

Practical Assessment, conducted in practical classes (individual) through:
3 practical assessments (P1, P2, P3) – 6 (2+2+2) points
1 challenge (D) – 2 points

Final grade = 0.1 x P1 + 0.1 x P2 + 0.1 x P3 + 0.1 * D + 0.3 * T1 + 0.3 * T2

The student obtains the classification of Approved/exempt from exam upon obtaining:
- Minimum attendance of 60% in practical classes
- Grade T1 + T2 >= 6
- Final grade >=10

Or
Admitted to exam, if:
- Attendance of 60% of practical classes;

- Final grade for the academic period equal to or greater than 6 points.

Exam (60%) + 40% (related to practical assessments and challenges already completed)
Passed the exam if: Exam grade >= 6
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
