Learning outcomes Gain knowledge about the molecular basis of cancer and cancer cell, recognizing the importance of basic research in the evolution of clinical applications in oncology, know how to perform some laboratory techniques used in cancer research. Students should acquire the conceptual and practical bases for conducting research in oncobiology. Should understand the onset and progression of malignancies and feel able to discuss and develop strategies to develop research in this domain, and exercise technical functions in a research laboratory. It is also expected that they can solve problems associated with the subject analyzed, showing the ability to apply knowledge to practice. In terms of attitudes, students should develop the ability to work in teams to solve problems and in the acquisition of knowledge.
Syllabus Characterization of benign and malignant tumours: classification, evolution and histology.

Main Bibliography Weinberg R A (2006) The Biology of Cancer, Garland Science, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research Ed., 864p.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria In a first stage (120 min) an exhibition of the contents is presented by the tutor to give students a general overview of the contents and highlight the most relevant aspects. After the educational activities take place mostly in the context of mentoring where we discuss the learning objectives and resolve exercises for deepening the contents through bibliographic research. Finally, the responses to problems are discussed among students and teachers and all doubts clarified. Teamwork is encouraged and valued. Other forms of contact include oral presentation of articles in workshop format and laboratory classes. Knowledge is assessed by tests with questions of objective response, allowing effective feedback on the learning
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
