Learning outcomes a) Present a comprehensive understanding of the concept of "filmmaker" and recognize the relevance of filmmakers' discourse.
b) Identify concepts and expressions from these discourses, as well as specificities of their respective creative processes, focusing on contemporary European cinema.
c) Examine the connection between filmmakers' thought and poetics and film theory.

Syllabus 1. The "Filmmakers on Film" Approach.
1.1. Expanded notion of "filmmaker."
1.2. Problems: scope, potential, and limits of the approach within current film theory.
1.3. Similarities and differences between Jacques Aumont's "Filmmaker Theories" and the "Filmmakers on Film" Approach.
1.4. Similarities and differences between Auteur Theory and the "Filmmakers on Film" Approach.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is taught through discussion of texts previously read by students and viewing of films. Assessment consists of two elements:
1) operationalization of the "filmmakers on film";
2) participation in class and follow-up sessions.
