Entry requirements	Students of the Integrated Master’s Degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences with knowledge in the fields of Anatomy and Physiology of the Skin, Skin Pathology and Pharmaceutical Technology.
Learning outcomes	At the end of this unit the student must be able to: - Identify the differences between medicines, medical devices and cosmetics regarding general legal requirements, life cycle and scope of application; - Identify the functions, mode of action and technological characteristics of the main categories of cosmetics; - Analyze the composition, labelling and claims of a cosmetic product under a critical perspective considering the legal requirements of these products; - Correctly advise and promote the adequate use of cosmetics; - To identify the requirements and methods for product development, preparation, characterization and quality control of cosmetic products.
Syllabus	1 - Introduction to different products designed for skin care and treatment: medicines, medical devices and cosmetics – definitions, classification and functions; borderline products. 2-Skin: 2.1 Anatomy physiology and functions; 2.2 Types/status of skin; 2.3 Skin aging; 2.4 Skin hydration; 3 Cosmetics: 3.1 Legal requirements; 3.2 Cutaneous biometry assessment and efficacy evaluation (claim substantiation); 3.3 Quality and safety assessment; 3.4 Emerging concepts and trends (e.g. sustainability and marketing trends); 3.5 Cleaning and hydration preparations; 3.6 Sunscreen formulations; 3.7 Anti-aging formulations; 3.8 – Anti-transpirant and deodorants; 3.9 Hair products 4 – Cosmetics for special populations (babies and pregnant women) 5 - Complementary strategies combining cosmetics/medical devices/medicines.
