Learning outcomes This UC aims to give an overview of the organization and role of the fundamental unit of living beings, the cell, so that students can use this knowledge to better understand the physiology of the several systems of human body. At the end, the students should be able to: - Characterize the main components of the cell: nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. - Characterize the structure and functions of the different cellular constituents: cell membrane, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, and mitochondria. - Understand the organization of cytoskeleton, as well as the processes involved in intracellular transport. - Understand the main pathways of cell communication. - Understand the mechanisms involved in the regulation of cell cycle and death. - Understand the organization of cells into different tissues. - Characterize and understand the role of stem cells - Characterize the cancer cells.
