Learning outcomes The main objectives of the Unit of Human Geography are:
• To use the language concerning the geographical distribution of human phenomena in the space
• To analyze the cities, the urban systems and the urban networks
• To know the characterization and the analysis of the relationship between different spaces
• To interpret the implications of various models of spatial organization
• To analyze the shapes and the structures of urban space
• To know the impacts of human activities on the territory
• To develop skills about the diversity of the processes of territorial development in Portugal.
• To develop skills of analysis at different geographic scales.
Syllabus The syllabus of the Unit of Human Geography is organized in 4 sections: 1. Introduction to Human Geography
1.1 Concepts of Space, Time and Place
2. Study of the dynamics of population
2.1. Demographic structures, population dynamics and volumes
3. The geographical structure of the territory and Human Activities 3.1. Settlement, Flows and urban Networks
3.2. Nodes and Urban Hierarchies
3.3. Space diffusion, concepts and processes
3.4 Human Activities and its relationship with the territory: spaces of dominant agricultural, industrial, tertiary
4. Territorial Pressures
4.1. Territorial tensions, Boundaries and Borders
4.2. Territorial inequalities, case studies from global to local scale.
4.3 Globalization and changes in geographic space, new trends and challenges
