Entry requirements -
Learning outcomes Students should acquire notions about the behaviour of structural systems concerning the equilibrium of forces, resistance of materials and structural safety, creating a knowledge base for the design of structures as part of the architectural exercise. These goals are fulfilled through the following competences: a) Ability to understand and analyze the equilibrium of a material point and of structural systems; b) Ability to analyze and understand the equilibrium working of fundamental elementary systems, like trusses, beams, frames, cables and arches; c) Ability to understand and apply safety criteria of structural elements, applying them in their pre-dimensioning; d) Ability to distinguish different materials based on strength and mechanical behavior.
Syllabus 1 - Fundamental concept of force; Fundamental concept of equilibrium of forces; Triangle of forces; Equilibrium of a material point; Relationship between form and forces; 2 - Fundamental concept of momentum of a force about a point and about an axis; Concept of couple of forces; Equilibrium of couples; 3 - Equilibrium of 2D structures: Supports and conditions of equilibrium; Supporting reactions; 4 - Basic structural elements: Equilibrium; Internal forces; Beams and trusses; Frames; Cables; Arches; 5 - Geometric properties of plan sections; 6 - Introduction to Strength of Materials: Concept of mechanical stress; Concept of deformation; Mechanical strength of materials; Safety criteria; Initial sizing of structural elements.
