Learning outcomes In this Course Unit, students are expected to learn the concepts associated to the ground improvement and soil reinforcement methods, which will enable them to strengthen the ability to understand and analyse problems in different geotechnical situations, and should be able to:
O1 – identify the ground improvement (mechanical, hydraulic and physical/chemical methods) and soil reinforcement methods, explaining their advantages and limitations;
O2 – select the more appropriate technique in a given geotechnical situation;
O3 - design and plan the ground improvement and strengthening techniques;
O4 - plan and assess the efficiency of the ground improvement and strengthening techniques;
O5 – recognise trends in development and research, including instrumentation and monitoring systems;
Syllabus 1. Introduction
2. Ground densification
3. Ground consolidation
4. Ground improvement by adding materials
5. Soil reinforcement (Reinforced earth; Geosynthetics).
