Learning outcomes To give students notions of environmental problems associated with engineering works and to evaluate measures for the minimization of negative environmental impacts.
Skills:
(a) Recognition of the environmental consequences associated to the construction, operation and maintenance
of engineering works.
(b) Knowledge of the different phases of the process of AIA.
(c) Knowledge of the meaning of the different components of EIA.
(d) Knowledge of the procedures for the elaboration of EIA;
(e) Domain of the conception of PDA;
(f) Domain of the analysis and conception of minimization measures for the control of water quality, air quality, noise and pollutants from roads runoff.
Syllabus 1. ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY
Environmental problems resulting from the construction of engineering works. Evolution of the environmental
policy. Principles and objectives of the sustainable development. Sustainability indicators.
2. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (AIA)
The AIA process. Project cycle and integration in the AIA. Methodologies and evaluation techniques. Scoping.
Public participation. Environmental Impact Statement. Post-evaluation.
3. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDIES (EIA)
Structure and components of the EIA. Forecasting methodologies of environmental impacts. Minimization
measures. Multicriteria analysis.
4. TECHNIQUES FOR PREDICTING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
Environmental impacts associated with the construction, operation and decommissioning of civil works. Models and forecasting techniques. Expert systems for environmental assessment.
