Learning outcomes The following competencies will be developed in this curricular unit:
a) Domain street intersection’s design in urban areas, including priority intersections, roundabouts and signalized
intersections.
b) Understanding the need for urban planning integrating mobility policies.
c) Understanding general concepts and data collection processes required in traffic studies and transport planning.
d) Understanding the concept of sustainable urban mobility in its different features: pedestrian, access for people with
disabilities, or special needs, non-motorized (cycling) and motorized modes.
e) Understanding the different urban transport subsystems: Parking Policy and Management, Public Transportation,
Traffic Calming, Pedestrian System
f) Recognition of different families of transport planning models.
Syllabus 1) TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AND URBAN PLANNING: Historical evolution of urban transport system’s typologies.
Historical context of urban planning processes and its articulation with the transport systems.
2) TRANSPORT PLANNING: Basic concepts for transport studies. Transport Models. Four-step model. Discrete Choice Models. Activity Based Models.
3) TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURES AND URBAN MOBILITY: Road hierarchy and geometric criteria of urban transport infrastructures. Sustainable urban mobility in its different features: pedestrian, access for people with disabilities, or special needs, non-motorized cycling) and motorized modes. Dimensioning of road intersections: unsignalized intersections, signalized intersections and roundabouts. Capacity and service levels of urban road infrastructures.
