Entry requirements Concepts acquired in Mechanics and waves, Statics, Calculus III and Hydraulics I.
Learning outcomes The Hydraulic II curricular unit aim to provide the students a good training in the field of free surface flow, through orifices and over weirs and in porous media, as well as, the characteristics and operating conditions of pumps and turbines. Ensure a solid basis in solving problems or applications of this area in Civil Engineering. It also aims to contribute to their training under the critical thinking in problem solving and the acquisition of interpersonal skills of individual and team work.
At the end of the curricular unit the students must have acquired the following competences:
a) Ability of the computation of free surface profiles in steady flows on fixed bed open channels.
b) Ability of the determination of orifices and weirs flow capacity.
c) Ability of the computation of flow rates and piezometric levels of flows in homogeneous porous media.
d) Knowledge on choice and functioning of pumps and turbines.
Syllabus Chapter 1. Open-channel flows: Uniform regime; Bernoulli’s theorem and specific energy; Types of flow; Total momentum; Froude number and flow control; Free surface profiles for constant flow rate; Hydraulic jump; Free surface profiles for spatially varied flow; Rapidly varied steady flows.
Chapter 2. Flows through orifices and over weirs: Orifices in small thickness walls, in large thickness walls and submerged orifices; Sharp-crested weir; Crest shape weir.
Chapter 3. Flows in porous media: Darcy’s law and permeability; Permeability determination; Darcy’s law validity; Application of Darcy’s law to homogeneous and isotropic media; Unidirectional and radial flows.
Chapter 4. Turbines and pumps: General description and installation conditions of turbines; Elementary theory of turbomachines; Similarity of turbomachines; Turbines functioning in steady conditions; Installation conditions of pumps; Pumps diagrams; Study of steady functioning based on characteristic curves; Choice of pumps.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This curricular unit has a duration of one semester, involving 75 hours of contact in classes, 83 h of autonomous work and 10 hours of evaluation. The approval grants the student 6 ECTS credits. Contact hours include 60 h of theoretical-practical classes (TP) and 15 h of laboratory classes (PL). The evaluation is carried out in two phases: continuous evaluation and exam evaluation, allowing the student to dispense the exam if he approves in the continuous evaluation. The minimum requirements (attendance and classification) to be admitted to the exam and the continuous and exam evaluation criteria are defined annually, considering that: the continuous evaluation includes tests (70 to 90%), laboratory reports (10 to 20%) and portfolio of individual exercises (0 to 20%). The evaluation by exam includes one test (80 to 90%) and the laboratory reports (10 to 20%). In the exam, it is not allowed to improvement of the laboratory work done in continuous evaluation.
