Learning outcomes Acquaint students with the main journalistic writing techniques, namely news, leads, and titles. Students should be able to employ autonomously such techniques.
Students should master the main journalistic writing techniques when producing hard news, namely by employing titles, leads, the inverted pyramid and bloc construction. Students should recognize the employing of these techniques in other journalistic genres, namely reports, interviews, opinion, and chronicle.
Syllabus 1. The journalist's profession: role, status, know-how and ethics.
2. The journalistic writing:
- Objectives: how to write, why, and for whom
- Sources and data: writing from what?
- Linguistic record
- Style and language
3. Techniques for creating journalistic texts:
- Selection and hierarchy.
- Choosing an angle. Maintaining balance.
- The Lead.
- The six W's.
- Inverted pyramid. Bloc construction.
4. Techniques for relating with the readers:
- Titles; superleads; legends.
5. Diferent genres, diferent techniques:
- Hard News.
- Interview.
- Report.
- Fotolegend.
- Chronicle.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria a) Participation in classes by producing jornalistic texts in a weekly basis (10% da cotação).
b) Written test, especcially about news stories (70%), 30 november.
c) Feature reporting done as team work (20%), 11 january.
