Year 1
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 4,5
Workload PL(15H)/TP(30H)
Scientific area Mathematics
Entry requirements N.A.
Learning outcomes Create awareness of the usefulness of mathematical modelling in several areas by: identifying variables, constants, and mathematical relationships between them; and to characterize the nature of those variables. Expose students to a wide range of mathematical models either of deterministic or of probabilistic nature.
Syllabus 1. Introduction
1.1 Building, studying and validating models
1.2 Analysing models

2.2 Predator-prey systems. Species competition. Periodical solutions
2.3. Discrete models in Biology
2.4. Interest rates
2.5. Linear optimization models
2.6. Fitting a linear model: graphical method and least squares method

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching methodology is based on theoretical-practical lessons (30 hours) as well as practical lessons using the computer (15 hours). The theoretical part is carried out through the explanation of the subjects, accompanied by examples and dialogue with the students to whom written notes are provided. The practical part is based on the resolution of exercises both with guidance and autonomously, with or without using software (previously introduced in the Mathematics Laboratory curricular unit).
Assessment undertaken throughout the teaching-assessment period will consist of two written tests. The student will also be given the possibility of a final exam.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
