Learning outcomes The main goals of this course unit are to disseminate applications of lasers in medicine and the basic concepts of physical optics that allow their understanding.
At the end of this course, the student should be able to identify and characterize several types of laser systems (and associated optics) for therapeutic applications. The student should be able to understand the biophysical mechanisms of interaction of laser light with biological tissues. The student should also be aware of the state of the art laser applications in medicine.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching/learning activities of this curricular unit comprise theoretical-practical classes and laboratory practices. Students also learn content related to the skills to be acquired through programmed “online” activities in the form of quizzes, using distance learning platforms such as Moodle. There will be a set of laboratory activities where the student will become familiar with some experimental techniques for the study of laser-tissue interactions. At the end, the student should be able to recognize the physical principles underlying the functioning of lasers and describe some of their medical applications. More direct contact with professionals in the field of lasers in biomedicine is promoted through mandatory participation in one or two seminars proposed throughout the semester.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
