Learning outcomes Through the teaching of Epidemiology, it is intended to contribute so that the future physician will be able to exercise his/her activity, in any domain of professional practice, using instruments essential to that same practice and developing learning skills that will accompany them throughout their entirety. professional life. At the end of the Course, students should be able to:
1-Defining Epidemiology and knowing its usefulness;
2-Characterize the main steps and strategies of the epidemiological method;
3-Proceed with the description of health and disease in the Community;
4-Apply epidemiological knowledge in the domains of Clinical Medicine and Preventive Medicine.
5-Characterize the different types of epidemiological studies;
6-Apply epidemiological studies to the description, analysis, application and evaluation of community health problems.
Syllabus 1The concept and uses of Epidemiology, stages of the epidemiological method,concept of health and disease;criteria for establishing causality.Concepts of absolute number,ratio,proportion and rate;measures of frequency.
2Causes of morbidity and mortality and associated factors.The concept of risk factor in a community and in an individual perspective.Sources of information-demographic and health;The concept DALYS and its importance.Compare trends at national and international level;distinguish between gross and specific rates and the information they provide;calculatate and interpret patterns.
3Types of rates of epidemiological studies and aplications.
4Aplications of Epidemiology in field of Clinical Medicine and Preventive Medicine.Preventive strategies.Clinical trials assessment.Screening programs-concept, indicators and evaluation.Dynamics of the various epidemics-infectious diseases associated with lifestyles and the interaction with the environment including the profession/occupation

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The following teaching-learning methodologies will be used:
1. Orientation to the contents and objectives and theoretical frameworks of reference;
2. Self-learning in small groups, coordinated by the teacher;
3. Presentation of objectives, with discussion with the teacher and colleagues;
4. Application of the knowledge acquired through the resolution of a worksheet discussed with the patient and colleagues.

Knowledge assessment through written tests, with multiple choice or quick answer questions;
There are 2 moments of partial evaluation and a moment of global evaluation of all contents. If the student does not pass, he/she will still have the opportunity to take the global final exam and the appeal exam.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
