Learning outcomes This UC aims to give an overview of the organization and role of the fundamental unit of living beings, the cell, so that students can use this knowledge to better understand the physiology of the several systems of human body. At the end, the students should be able to:
- Characterize the main components of the cell: nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids.
- Characterize the structure and functions of the different cellular constituents.
- Relate the organization of the cytoskeleton with intracellular transport.
- Characterize the main pathways of cell communication.
- Characterize the mechanisms involved in the regulation of cell cycle and death.
- Characterize the organization of cells into different tissues.
- Characterize the stem cells and cancer cells.
- Team working.
- Reveal adequate attitudes to the medical profession.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria There are introductory seminars that encompasses the main topics and objectives. In order to stimulate the participation and motivation of the students, the professor promotes a great interaction with the students using several videos and quizzes. After a self-learning phase, in which they use the bibliography and multimedia lessons to attain the objectives, the learning activities take place in tutorial classes in groups of 25-27 students supervised by a professor. These classes are complemented with exercises to apply the knowledge, as well as by practical classes demonstrative of the subjects in learning. The evaluation is carried out by several partial tests, and at the end of the UC by a global test with multiple choice questions and quick open questions. Qualitative assessment of professional attitudes is done throughout the UC. The specific evaluation criteria for the UC are subject to approval by the Course Committee and Pedagogical Council at the beginning of the school years.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
