Energy Efficiency in Buildings

Code 15311
Year 2
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Construction
Entry requirements Knowledge of Building Physics.
Learning outcomes The curricular unit of Energy Efficiency in Buildings aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge concerning the implementation and evaluation of energy efficiency improvement solutions in buildings.
The following competencies will be developed in this curricular unit:
a) Ability on the methodology of evaluation of the energy performance of residential buildings.
b) Ability on current legislation to evaluate the energy performance of residential buildings.
c) Ability on building thermal design, determination of energetic classification and CO2 emission.
d) Ability to identify the processes and measures to improve energy efficiency of buildings, to identify the requisites of the nearly zero energy buildings (NZEB) and to understand the concept of passive house.
e) Ability on assessment of the economic impact of the implementation of energy efficiency improvement solutions.
Syllabus 1) Framework of energy policies related to energy efficiency in buildings;
2) Heat transfer by transmission in the building envelope elements (opaque and glazed); Heat transfer associated with air renewal; Solar gains and internal gains; Thermal inertia and useful heat gains; Energy balance in heating and cooling seasons;
3) Active technical systems for heating, cooling and preparation of sanitary heat water; Renewable energy systems; Passive systems for heating and cooling; Energy needed for the preparation of sanitary heat water; Primary energy; CO2 emissions and Energetic Class.
4) Processes and measures to improve energy efficiency in buildings, requirements for nearly zero energy buildings (NZEB) and the concept of passive house.
5) Calculation of energy bill, increased investment costs, energy savings and simple investment return period.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This curricular unit has a duration of one semester, involving 60 h of contact in classes, 98 h of autonomous work and 10 h of evaluation. The approval in this curricular unit grants the student 6 ECTS. Contact hours include 30 h of theoretical classes (T) and 30 h of practical classes (PL). The evaluation is carried out in two phases, continuous evaluation and exam, allowing the student to dispense the exam if he approves in the continuous evaluation. The minimum requirements (attendance and classification) to be admitted to the exam, as well as the continuous and exam evaluation criteria, are established annually by the coordinator of the curricular unit observing the following: the continuous evaluation include test(s) (40 to 60%), practical works (40 to 60%) and attendance and participation (0 to 10%); the evaluation by exam include a test (50 to 100%) and practical works (0 to 50%). The practical works done in continuous evaluation cannot be improve in exam.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
