Entry requirements -
Learning outcomes The curricular unit aims to develop knowledge in terms of structural strengthening, creating the following
competences: a) Evaluation of the resistant capacity of existing structures; b) Understanding the process of
loading transference between element build at different ages; c) Understanding the mechanics of different
strengthening techniques; d) Perception of the seismic strengthening problem; e) Identification and
understanding of specific aspects of old buildings and justification of the strengthening strategies; f) Understanding of the execution techniques.
Syllabus 1) Structural strengthening techniques: a) Strengthening of structural elements by concrete jacketing:
Description of the technique; Models of equilibrium; Behaviour of the interface; Design and execution. b) Strengthening of structural elements by external reinforcement: Description of the technique; Models of equilibrium; Connection between the reinforcement and strengthened element; Design and execution. 2)
Seismic strengthening of buildings: Framing and analysis of the problem; Framing in the relevant codes;
Strategies and techniques of strengthening. 3) Strengthening of old buildings: Analysis of specific characteristics and their influence on the structural behaviour; Strategies and techniques of strengthening;
Analysis of equilibrium models; Methodologies of structural analysis.
