Bituminous Mixtures Performance

Code 15314
Year 2
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/TP(30H)
Scientific area Construction
Entry requirements Concepts acquired in Construction Materials I and Construction Materials II
Learning outcomes Consolidate and give new knowledge on design and properties of traditional and non-traditional bituminous mixtures, namely recycled mixtures, modified asphalt mixtures with fibers, modified bitumens and adeshion promoters. Provide advanced training in the performance of bituminous mixtures, serving as a specialization for the development of research studies in this specific field and for the bituminous pavements design. The following skills will be developed in this course:
a) Ability on concepts of durability and adhesiveness of bitumen
b) Knowledge the influence of bitumen and aggregate properties on the performance of bituminous mixtures.
c) Knowledge the influence of compaction and climatic actions on the performance of bituminous mixtures
d) Ability on experimental study of bituminous mixtures performance
Syllabus 1. Revisions about the methodology for design, characterization and production of bituminous mixtures.
2. Application fields of traditional and modified bituminous mixtures
3. Performance topics for bituminous mixtures;
4. Factors influencing the bituminous mixtures performance: Durability and adhesion of bitumen; Aggregates; Compaction; Climatic actions.
5. Performance evaluation of bituminous mixtures: Water sensitivity, Stiffness, Fatigue resistance and Resistance to permanent deformations.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This curricular unit has a duration of one semester. Contact hours include 30 h of theoretical classes (TP) and 30 h of practical classes (PL). The evaluation is carried out in two phases, continuous evaluation and exam, allowing the student to dispense the exam if he approves in the continuous evaluation.
The minimum requirements (attendance and classification) to be admitted to the exam, as well as the continuous and exam evaluation criteria, are established annually by the coordinator of the curricular unit observing the following: the continuous evaluation include test(s) (40 to 60%), practical works (40 to 60%) and participation (0 to 10%); the evaluation by exam include a test (40 to 100%) and practical works (0 to 60%). The practical works done in continuous evaluation cannot be improve in exam.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
