Learning outcomes The Curricular Unit aims to introduce and develop aspects related to the application of geographic information systems for solving spatial problems, including the domain of a computer application for production, maintenance and analysis of spatial data.
The following competencies will be developed in this Curricular Unit:
a) Understanding the objectives and functionalities of geographic information systems.
b) Understanding map projections and georeferencing systems.
c) Understanding of spatial data bases structures.
d) Understanding the main spatial data models: vector and raster.
e) Mastering data acquisition, processing and spatial analysis techniques for diagnostic, planning, management and control purposes.
f) Recognition of different tools for advanced spatial analysis available in GIS software and its potential in different areas of Civil Engineering.
Syllabus 1. Introduction to GIS.
2. Geographical reference systems.
3. Geographic data models (vector and raster).
4. Geographical database (GDB) and database management systems (DBMS).
5. Graphic and alphanumeric data acquisition and processing.
6. Vector spatial analysis basic operations.
7. Remote sensing and digital terrain models (DTM).
8. WebGIS, mobile GIS and ModelBuilder.
9. Applications of GIS in Civil Engineering.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The UC lasts one semester, involving 60 hours of contact with the teacher, 98 hours of independent work and 10 hours for assessment (total: 168 hours). Approval of this curricular unit grants the student 6 ECTS. Contact hours are organized as follows:
- theoretical classes (T), with presentation of the syllabus and public presentation of research works prepared by students.
- theoretical-practical classes (TP), with application of the subject in field data collection work, preparation and discussion of projects, with support from the teacher.
The assessment is carried out in two phases:
Periodic assessment with theoretical work presented in class (25%), practical work (30%) and a written test (40%). Participation in classes will be considered in the evaluation (5%).
Final exam: Practical work (30%) and written exam (65%). Attendance in classes will be considered in the assessment by exam (5%).
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
