Learning outcomes |
The main objective of this CU is the study of statics and mechanics of solids. In particular, different methodologies are used to learn to determine the equilibrium stresses in structural components due to static loads and to understand the deformation mechanisms of these components when subjected to tensile, bending, torsional, and shear stresses acting individually or jointly, in order to acquire the ability to carry out its dimensioning, and also to analyze and solve hyper-static problems.

Syllabus |
Static of rigid bodies; Equivalent systems of forces; Equilibrium of rigid bodies; Structural analysis; Distributed forces; Moments of inertia; Concept of stress; Stress and deflection under axial loading; Torsion; Bending; Maximum stress and yield criteria; Mohr's circle; Beams deflection.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
The adopted teaching method combines theoretical exposition, in a 1st phase, with the resolution of practical cases, in a 2nd phase, covering the framework of the themes, concepts and theory, simplifying hypotheses and techniques inherent to each of the subjects to be teach. In order to accentuate the practical implications of the exposed subjects, practical exercises will be carried out in all chapters. Attendance to classes aims to facilitate the apprehension and understanding of concepts, techniques and methods of analysis, and the interpretation of methods associated with the main approaches to statics and mechanics of solids. The support elements for teaching the classes and solving the exercises by the students will be made available in the area of the curricular unit on the Moodle platform.
