Learning outcomes In this CU it is intended that the student structure the knowledge about the mechanical behavior of materials, acquire analytical skills and an attitude of synthesis of those knowledge directed towards design/dimensioning and learn concepts, characteristics and purposes of mechanical elements.
Analyze the mechanical behavior of the components of a system with regard to stresses and strains, elastic behavior and mechanical strength.
Establish concepts, purposes and characteristics of components of mechanical systems in order to cover aspects related to the operation, selection, design/dimensioning (static and fatigue), safety and reliability of mechanical equipment.
Designing machine parts, grounding a methodology and procedures applicable to most machine elements, mechanisms, machines and structures.
Syllabus 1- Introduction: Considerations and methodologies concerning mechanical design; Materials selection and properties; Stress and deformation analysis; Factor of Safety and Design Factor. 2- Fatigue of mechanical components: Characterization of the process of fatigue failure, Curves of fatigue strength; Methods of project design against fatigue failure. 3– Shaft design: Fatigue dimensioning; Deformation; critical rotation speed. 4– Gears for power transmission: Involute properties; Types of gears; Loadings on tooth; Thickness dimensioning; Teeth correction. 5- Flexible power transmission components: Belt transmission design; Roller chain transmission design. 6- Shaft coupling: Interference couplings; Keys, pins and splines. 7– Shaft supports: contact pressure in simple supports; Bearings selection; Types of bearings.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching methodology in this CU involves, on one hand, the exposure of theoretical contents, covered in theoretical classes, with the support of audiovisual resources that are made available to students through Moodle. On the other hand, in the theoretical-practical classes, exercises related to the theoretical matter are carried out, applied to concrete examples of dimensioning of machine parts. Exercises are also made available to students through Moodle. In parallel to these activities, students are invited to design a mechanical system for power transmission where they must apply the dimensioning and strength verification calculations covered in theoretical and theoretical-practical classes, starting by identifying the input requirements, such as power and the rotation at the entrance and exit, based on which the different components are identified and the strength is verified based on their dimensions.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
