Learning outcomes By the end of the class, students should be able to:
a) Recognise, understand, and apply fundamental concepts from geopolitics and strategy;
b) Understand and critically assess the main theories from geopolitics and strategy;
c) Recognise the main geopolitical dynamics of the present time;
d) Assess the behaviour and discourse of international actores according to the logic of strategy.
Syllabus I.Geopolitics
1.Main concepts from geopolitics;
2.The evolution of classical geopolitics;
3.Critical geopolitics and immaterial factors in gepolitics;
4.Geopolitics and maritime power today;
5.Geoeconomics.

II.Strategy
1.Main concepts from strategy and the hierarchy of strategy;
2.Theoretical differences between geopolitics and strategy/grand strategy;
3.Rationality and strategic decision-making;
4.Nuclear strategy;
5. Strategic domains;
6.The problem of 'grand strategy'.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The geopolitical and strategic ways of thinking will be acquired by reflecting upon theory, historical cases, present-day cases, and works of fiction. Such reflection will take place in theoretical-practical classes, seminar discussion, independent study, essay writing and a presentation to fellow students about a practical case chosen by the student.
