Learning outcomes This course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge about the main thermodynamic cycles used in engineering. Steam power cycles and gas turbine cycles will be covered, with an emphasis on their efficiency and practical applications. Students will also study simple refrigeration cycles,
which are essential for refrigeration systems. The unit also includes the study of perfect gas mixtures and the basic principles of psychrometry, with application in air conditioning systems. The concepts of combustion and its energy and environmental implications will be introduced. The aim is to develop the ability to critically and quantitatively analyze different thermal systems. By the end, students should be able to interpret and evaluate the performance of real thermodynamic cycles. The approach combines theory, practical examples, and applied exercises.
Syllabus 1. Steam power cycles.
2. Gas turbine cycles.
3. Simple refrigeration cycles.
4. Mixture of ideal gases.
5. Basics of psychrometry and air conditioning.
6. Combustion.
