Environmental Technology and Chemistry

Code 15987
Year 3
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Industrial Chemistry
Entry requirements Basic knowledge of analytical chemistry
Learning outcomes The specific goals are pointed out next::
1 - To identify monitoring parameters the main operational parameters;
2 - To describe the main technologies applied in effluent treatment;
3 – Promote reuse opportunities;
Before the completion of this course students should be able to understand the fundamentals of biological, chemical and physical aspects applied on monitoring and treatment of water, wastewater and solid waste. Specifically they should describe fundamental principles of wastewater treatment processes and solve problems related with monitoring and treatment processes.

Syllabus Environmental Quality. Prevention of pollution. Water pollution: water quality control and water purification. Physical-chemistry and biological processes. Physical units: grit chambers, equalization basins, primary sedimentation tanks and dissolved air flotation. Chemical units: coagulation/flocculation. Biological methods to treat liquid effluents: aerobic and anaerobic systems. Polishing technologies: bio-sorption, disinfection and membranes technologies. Recycling and saving resources. Alternative technologies for industrial wastewater treatment. Solid waste: strategies of monitoring and management. Basic processes on solids treatment: mechanical and biological treatment. Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theoretical classes (TE), theoretical-practical classes (TP) and laboratory practices (PL) are taught to achieve the skills and desired learning outcomes. In the TE classes, after the teacher exposes the themes is followed by the analysis and discussion of contexts of application of the different environmental technologies, with the participation of students being requested and encouraged. The TP classes are intended for the realization of the problems, which require the understanding and application of the fundamentals of the studied environmental technologies. In PL classes, analytical determinations are carried out with water and effluent samples according to Standard Methods procedures. These activities are carried out in groups and the results obtained are subject to analysis. The UC assessment included the theoretical and practical aspects carried out through 2 tests and specific practical aspects carried out in groups, including performance and analysis of the results obtained
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
