Learning outcomes The general objective of this curricular unit is to complement the body of knowledge and basic skills in the disciplinary area of Fluid Mechanics. In this case focused on very concrete applications found in systems and processes involving fluids. Learning outcomes focus on the following set of skills and competences:
1. Know the flow in compressible regime in steady and non-stationary regime;
2. Know the different types of turbomachinery;
3. Be able to describe, using fundamental equations, the operation of axial and centrifugal, action and reaction machines;
4. Establish the conditions for the establishment of the water hammer;
5. Be able to insert turbomachinery into fluid networks.
6. Be able to use CFD programs to model the flow in turbomachines.
Syllabus 1. One-dimensional compressible flow.
2. Flow in turbomachinery; energy and mass exchanges;
3. Dimensional analysis, characteristic curves, specific speed and machine geometry;
4. Influence of the Reynolds number; cavitation; Euler's and Bernoulli's equations in a rotor;
5. Flow in radial and axial turbomachines;
6. Pressure waves in pipelines, water hammer;
7. Design of facilities with turbomachinery.
8. CFD modelling of turbomachinery flow.
