Learning outcomes In this curricular unit it is intended that the student structure the knowledge about the mechanical behavior of materials, acquire the ability to analyze and synthesize that knowledge directed to design/dimensioning and apprehend concepts, characteristics and purposes of mechanical elements.
Starting from the analysis of the mechanical behavior of materials with regard to stresses and deformations, elastic and plastic behavior, constitutive laws and strength criteria, it seeks to establish concepts, purposes and characteristics of the components of mechanical systems in order to cover aspects related to the functioning , selection, design/dimensioning (static and fatigue), safety and reliability of mechanical equipment. The main objective of this CU is to teach how to design machine elements, laying the foundations for a methodology and procedures applicable to most machine elements, mechanisms and joining elements for structures.
Syllabus 1– Introduction: Mechanical design considerations and methodologies; Selection and Properties of Materials; Stress adn deformation analysis; Safety coefficients.
2- Fatigue of mechanical components: Characterization of the fatigue failure process; S-N curves; Fatigue design/design methods.
3 – Dimensioning of shafts; Deformation of shafts; Critical rotation speed.
4 – Shaft coupling: Interference couplings; Keys, pins and splines.
5– Shaft supports: Contact pressure in simple supports; Bearing selection; Bearing types.
6– Threaded Fasteners and Screws: Threads forms; Power screws; Bolted joints; Loading and dimensioning of bolts under tensile, shear and combined loadings; Riveted joints.
7- Weldeded joint: Butt and fillet welds; Stresses in welded joints; Loading and dimensioning of welded joints under tensile, shear and combined loadings; Glued joints.
8 – Springs: Types of springs; Dimensioning.
