Learning outcomes - Identify the properties of materials, their processing and typical applications.
- Describe the basic concepts of material selection and the most appropriate processing method.
- Develop eco-selection, understand energy concerns and reuse. Promote the application of knowledge of ecoselection.

2. Material selection. Selection strategies and design requirements.
3. Selection of manufacturing processes.
4. Material properties. Mechanical, thermal, electrical and sensory properties.
5. Metal alloys in mechanical construction.
6. High-performance polymeric materials.
7. Advanced ceramic materials. Thermal barrier coatings.
8. Composite materials. Functional gradient materials. Multifunctional materials.
9. Ruin mechanisms in materials. Fatigue, creep, wear and corrosion.
10. Materials and the environment. Life cycle of a material.
